Displaying typical Kobani reaction time, Mirikami considered the frozen tableau outside a ten-foot radius around him and The Silha, and answered, “Apparently I do. How did you freeze them in place?” He backed away a couple of feet, simply because the avatar was within what Mirikami considered personal space and the proximity felt awkward.

“I did not freeze them in place; they are merely outside the bubble I created around you, nor is the rest of the external Universe slowed beyond them. That would be an energy expenditure greater than the capability of any elevated species.”

“Of course,” Mirikami said. “I should have asked how did you speed time up in this bubble?”

Mirikami had quickly recognized the alternative. He and The Silha were experiencing time at a vastly accelerated rate compared to the outside Universe. The dinos only appeared stationary to him, as his subjective clock ticked millions of times faster. If he waited long enough, he was sure he’d detect slight changes outside the bubble.

In a tone sounding as if he approved of Mirikami’s quick conclusion, the little avatar explained. “You are correct. It is a variation of the technique you learned is used by the Differentiators, the name your people gave the Olt’kitapi ships that project stasis fields to halt the flow of time inside a bubble, to preserve molten blobs of planetary core metals until needed for fabrication of habitat modules. Time is a dimension we can traverse as we move in spatial dimensions, at differing rates. Fast or slow. Within this bubble, we are traveling very rapidly in what your scientific terminology would describe as the forward direction of the arrow of time. The rate and direction of movement in all dimensions are relative.”

“How long can you maintain this bubble?”

“Vastly longer from your perspective than we need for my purpose.”

“It can’t be a coincidence that you arrived when you did, saving my butt from three carnivores. It implies you need me for some purpose, and you saved my lowly Type Two species life for that reason. The Olt’kitapi told Maggi and me that a subject you wanted to talk about was of great importance to the Silha and the Jing|!|.”

“The subject is of importance to many of the most recently elevated species like the Silha and Jing|!|, but it is more vital for tens of thousands of potential future species that deserve but may never achieve elevation. It is vital for them, but not urgent yet. We have an estimated few billion years to initiate the slowly developing adjustments that will eventually establish a balance between elevated species types. We want a balance achieved before eventual star death is so advanced that few intelligent species can evolve to achieve elevation.”

“Well, your appearance here was both vital and urgent from my perspective. I thank you. I don’t know how you knew to come when you did, but what is the cryptic thing you require of me in exchange?”

“We require nothing of you, but we request that you consider a complex and risky proposition we will offer to all Kobani humans.
